Herb Alpert Educational Village
Santa Monica, CA
Architect: John Berry Architects
Acoustics Consultant: Nagata Acoustics
Theatre Consultant: Fisher Dachs Associates
Completion Date: 2012
When construction is complete at the New Roads School in Santa Monica, it will be re-named the Herb Alpert Educational Village and its theatre, like much of the rest of it, will not be typical of your average high school. The 350-seat thrust theatre will have excellent sightlines, and an extremely intimate feel. No seat will be more than 35 feet from the stage and the vast majority are within 25 feet. In the interests of safety since the theatre will be crewed mostly by students, a wire rope grid is provided over the thrust. Upstage is a full fly tower with counterweight rigging and an acoustic barrier that can separate the stagehouse from the thrust area. This wall will serve as the orchestra shell when music groups are assembled on the thrust and will also allow a class to take place onstage while another occurs in the hall. Alec, while at FDA, served as project manager and theatre consultant through construction administration.
