Xiqu is a rich and lively art form with a long history in China. The 1,100-seat Main Theatre is the heart of the new centre, the first of several new venues at the West Kowloon Cultural District. Since part of the Xiqu tradition is outdoor performance, creating an open, naturally lit space has been a critical goal of the design team, The low ceiling reflects the sound down to the audience to support the unamplified natural voice, though much of Xiqu is performed with amplification. Variable acoustic features will allow this space to accommodate natural or amplified performance at the discretion of artists and management.
Stages is pleased to be part of the acoustics and sound systems design team led by Bob Essert of Sound Space Design (UK) for this exciting new facility.
