The Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts opened in 1975 and was designed by noted architect Bennie Gonzales. In 2005 Alec, as project manager for FDA was hired along with ZHA and Vital Management Solutions to evaluate the entire center and recommend a phased scope of work for its improvement. Alec's scheme for improving the Virginia Piper Theatre was approved and he worked with John Douglas Architects and McKay Conant Hoover Acoustics to implement the renovation. The renovated theatre has improved sightlines, with the furthest seat eight-feet closer to the stage and is fully ADA compliant yet the new theatre seats about 50 more people than before the renovation. The addition of side boxes and a proscenium arch greatly increased the warmth and intimacy of the previously cave-like venue. New rigging and dimming systems, as well as improved front-of-house lighting positions and renovated dressing rooms were needed as well.
