PROJECT DETAIL
Xiqu is a rich and lively art form with a long history in China. The 1,100-seat Main Theatre is the heart of the new centre, the first of several new venues at the West Kowloon Cultural District. Since part of the Xiqu tradition is outdoor performance, creating an open, naturally lit space has been a critical goal of the design team, The low ceiling reflects the sound down to the audience to support the unamplified natural voice. Variable acoustic features allow this space to accommodate natural or amplified performance. Stages was pleased to be part of the acoustics and sound systems design team led by Bob Essert of Sound Space Vision (UK) for this exciting new facility, which opened in January 2019.
