This 80-seat studio theatre sits in the loading dock of a former off-site laundry facility. Alec, as FDA's project manager worked with KSS Architects to take advantage of the fantastic historical fabric of the building. The resulting studio, with its exposed brick, slight asymmetry and the (abandoned) freight elevator door feels comfortable and natural when it is used as a classroom and is neutral enough to fade into the background when it is used as a theatre. Natural light is provided by glazing along the former loading side of the building. It can be completely blacked out with shades and black masking drapes for theatrical events.
